Majestic Theater, San Antonio, TX February 1st, 1987 Having finally conquered his addiction to alcohol and cocaine, in November 1986 Stevie Ray Vaughan embarked on his legendary “Live Alive” tour, generally reckoned to boast some of the finest performances of his career. Backed by Reese Wynans (keyboards), Tommy Shannon (bass) and Chris Layton (drums), the incendiary set featured here was taped for broadcast on San Antonio s KZEP-FM, and is presented with background notes and images.
Stevie is at the very top of his form as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, the opening two tracks are instrumentals that will have you gasping as he pours one solo after another, before an extended solo opening to ‘Ain’t Gone N Give Up On Love’. The recording quality is fine, and it’s been digitally remastered, and like most of these radio broadcasts you get the intro’s and tuning up before the music kicks in. This is a pure uncut concert, and live sound is never perfect. If a fan then these recordings are unmissable, they prove again and again just what an awesome artist he was and why still today he so sadly missed. Take one listen to his version of ‘Superstition’ (the old Stevie Wonder Song), SRV probably plays the best version you’ll ever hear of it. Add ‘Willie The Wimp’, ‘Dirty Pool’, ‘Couldn’t Stand The Weather’,’Life Without You’ to your playlist welll..enough said, he never played things the same twice. On the cover it says it’s an incendiary set, that about sums up this slice of blues by the master at his very best.
